Location The Battle of Surigao Strait happened in the Surigao Strait in the Philippines as one of three related actions that comprised the Battle for Leyte Gulf. The combatants were Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) versus U.S. Navy (USN) 7th Fleet plus carrier aircraft. Wartime History On October 24, 1944 USN carrier planes locate and attack Force C, the "Southern Force" in the Sulu Sea. On October 25, 1944 before dawn the Japanese "Southern Force" is attacked by U.S. Navy 7th Fleet surface ships and turned back during a brief but intense action. During the battle, two battlships are sunk including Fuso and three destroyers including Michishio. Fusō Sunk October 25, 1944 by aerial bombs and torpedo hits, located 2017 by RV Petrel. Michishio Sunk October 25, 1944 by gunfire and torpedoes from USS McDermutt and USS Hutchins. Contribute
