Location
The Surigao Strait is located southern Philippines between the Mindanao Sea (Bohol Sea) and the Leyte Gulf and the Philippine Sea. Borders Leyte, Panoan Island to the east and Dinagat Island to the west.
Wartime History
On October 20, 1944 a U.S. Navy (USN) 7th Fleet crossed from Leyte Gulf into the Surigao Strait then entered the Panaon Strait to land the U.S. Army 21st Infantry Reigment at on Panoan Island to secure the flank for the liberation of Leyte.
On October 25, 1944 the Battle of Surigao Strait was one of three
actions that comprised the Battle for Leyte Gulf including the Battle of Surigao Strait, Battle Off Samar and Battle off Cape Engano.
Battle of Surigao Strait
On October 25, 1944 before dawn the "Southern Force" is attacked by US Navy 7th Fleet surface ships and turned back during a brief but intense action. During the battle, two battlships are sunk and three destroyers.
