Location
The Battle off Cape Engaño (Battle off Cape Engano) happened October 25, 1944–October 26, 1944 off Cape Engaño in the Philippines as one of the related actions that comprised the Battle for Leyte Gulf. The combatants were the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) versus U.S. Navy (USN) plus carrier aircraft.
Wartime History
On October 25, 1944 at the start of the Battle off Cape Engano, the U.S. Navy (USN) Fast Carrier Force encountered the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) "Northern Force" and carrier planes sank aircraft carrier Zuikaku and light carriers Chiyoda, Zuiho,
and Chilose, the latter with the assistance of cruiser gunfire.
In the first planned suicide attacks of the Pacific War, Japanese kamikaze planes attack American warships off Leyte including USS St. Lo (CVE-63) and damage USS Sangamon (CVE-26), USS Suwannee (AO-33), USS Santee, USS White Plains (CVE-66), USS Kalinin Bay (CVE-68) and USS Kitkun Bay.
During October 26-27, 1944 the remnants of the Japanese Fleet limped
homeward through the Central Philippines and were attacked by U.S. Navy carrier aircraft that sink another light cruiser and four destroyers to bring Japanese battle losses to 26
combatant ships totaling over 300,000 tons.
