| Location Dinagat Island is located in the Dinagat Islands of Dinagat Islands Province in the Caraga Administrative Region / Caraga Region (Region XIII) in the central Philippines. Borders Leyte Gulf to the north, Surigao Strait to the west and beyond Leyte and the Dinagat Sound to the east. Wartime History On October 17, 1944 at 9:00am the first assault waves of the U.S. Army 6th Ranger Battalion land on the northern tip of Dinagat Island. Landing craft ran aground on coral reefs 120 yards offshore and the Rangers had to wade ashore. By 12:30pm, all companies were shore and found no enemy ashore. The light was operational on the same day as the landing and could be seen for twelve miles. Afterwards, the U.S. Navy (USN) began intensive minesweeping operations in Leyte Gulf that continued for the next three days. By October 20, 1944 for the invasion of Leyte, a total of 227 mines had been destroyed and a passage approximately six miles wide was cleared just north of Dinagat Island for the U.S. invasion force.
