Ship History
Built by Sasebo Naval Arsenal at Sasebo. Laid down May 21, 1921 as Nagara-class cruiser. Launched February 15, 1922 as Yura 由良. Comissioned March 20, 1923 in the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN).

Wartime History
PARTIAL HISTORY

On October 17, 1942 departs Shortland as part of a troop transport convoy "Tokyo Express" with Sendai, Tatsuta and fifteen destroyers with troops and cargo bound for Guadalcanal. On October 18, 1942 while returning to Shortland spotted by USS Grampus (SS-207) that fired a spread of four Mark 14 torpedoes at Yura, one hits the port side but fails to explode causing only a dent in the hull off Choiseul at Lat 7° 47' S, Long 157° 19' E then arrives Shortland. On October 23, 1942 departs Shortland bound for Guadalcanal but is recalled.

On October 24, 1942 departs Shortland as part of No. 2 Attack Unit with Rear Admiral Tamotsu Takama's flagship Akizuki, Harusame, Murasame and Yudachi. on a mission to bombard Guadalcanal in support of Japanese Army Lt. General Hyakutake offensive on Guadalcanal.

Sinking History
On October 25, 1942 at the northern entrance of Indispensable Strait, Yura was leading the attack group of destroyers. Attacked by five SBD Dauntless dive bombers from VS-71 and was hit by two bombs near the engine room causing the ship to flood and settle by the stern. The surviving crew are rescued by destroyers Harusame and Yudachi then scuttled the damaged cruiser at roughly Lat 8°15′S Long 159°07′E in the Indispensable Strait off Santa Isabelle Island. Afterwards, the bombardment mission was cancelled.
