    Indispensable Strait  Solomon Islands
Location
Indispensable Strait is located in the Solomon Islands and spans from northwest to southeast to the east of Central Province and Guadalcanal Province to the west and Malaita Province to the east and Rennell and Bellona Province and Makira-Ulawa Province to the south. Includes Indispensable Reef to the south of Rennell Island.

Wartime History
On October 25, 1942 the Japanese Naval force No. 2 Attack Unit under the command of Rear Admiral Tamotsu including Akizuki, Yura, Harusame, Murasame and Yudachi entered the northern end of Indispensable Strait on a mission to bombard Guadalcanal to support the to support the Japanese Army offensive. The force was attacked by U.S. Navy SBD Dauntless dive bombers and Yura was damaged and later scuttled. Afterwards, the mission was cancelled and the surviving ships withdrew to the northwest.

On November 12, 1942 in the evening, the Japanese Navy bombardment force under the command of Vice Admiral Hiroaki Abe assembled 81 miles north of Indispensable Strait before proceeding westward on a mission to bombard Guadalcanal but instead encounters U.S. Navy cruisers and destroyers during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal.
