IJN Cargo 872 Tons |
Wartime History Yoshino Maru was sunk February 13, 1944 by U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) 5th Air Force aircraft at roughly Lat 3 20' S, Long 143 00' E or possibly off Aitape. Shipwreck A wreck, likely Yoshino Maru is sunk into Muschu Bay to the west of Muschu Island. This wreck rests upright on a flat sandy bottom. Justin Taylan dived the wreck in 2004 with John Douglas and report: "It appears the ship might have been partially salvaged, large pieces are pulled away. The large, center cargo hold is empty. The wreck has a lot of fish life and fan corals, very impressive dive. All the inner compartments are easily accessible. According to villagers, the captain(?) swam to Muschu Island and was saved."
