Location Torokina PT Boat Base (Torokina Base) was located on Puruata Island with PT Boats moored to the east in Empress Augusta Bay. Wartime History On November 3, 1943 in the morning, eight PT Boats under the command of Commander Henry Farrow arrived to establish a PT Boat base on Puruata Island, known as Torokina PT Boat Base (Torokina Base) due to its proximity to Torokina on western Bougainville. On November 5, 1943 one of the first missions conducted from the new base was by PT-167. By late November, the base was under the command of Lt. Commander LeRoy Taylor. PT boats from this base covered the western entire west coast of Bougainville and as far north as Buka. On November 20, 1943 a Japanese air raid set fire to a fuel dump. On December 18, 1943 during the night, PT-124 and PT-187 moored off Puruata Island were both slightly damaged by a Japanese bomb but were able to go out on patrol the next night. By March 1944, the front moved forward and this base became a rear area then was abandoned. References At Close Quarters (1962) page 141 US Marine Raiders: Puruata Island. Contribute
