Ship History
Built by J.G.Lawrie in Glasgow, Scotland as a three masted iron ship. Launched 1869 as Loch Katrine owned by Glasgow Shipping Co. and registered in Glasgow, Scotland to provide passenger service between England to Australia.

On April 26, 1890, damaged during a severe storm off Australia and towed to Sydney Harbor. Afterwards, used as a coastal trade ship in Australia and New Guinea. In 1910, sold to a new owner in Australia and used as a coastal collier.

Around 1920, the Lock Katrine was being used as a coal ship anchored at Simpson Harbor off Rabaul. During 1929 converted to a prison ship to detain prisoners.

Sinking History
In 1937 afer the volcanic eruption, towed to Blanche Bay and partially sunk off Vunapope as a break water.

Shipwreck
During the Pacific War, this shipwreck of the Lock Katrine was repeatedly mistaken as a Japanese ship and bombed or strafed by Allied aircraft. Today, the twisted bow and stern wreckage are partially visible above the surface.
