Ship History
Built by American Shipbuilding Company in Lorain, Ohio. Laid down October 23, 1942 as Admirable-class minesweeper. Launched March 13, 1943 as USS Knave (AM-256) sponsored by sponsored by Mrs. Geraldine Donohue. Commissioned October 14, 1943 in the U.S. Navy (USN) under the command of Lt. Comdr. A. M. White and departed via the St. Lawrence River then arrived at Norfolk on November 24, 1943. For a brief period operated as a school ship at Little Creek, Virginia.

Wartime History
Departed from Hampton Roads via Trinidad and Recife before arriving at Rio de Janeiro on February 11, 1944 and conducted mine sweeping operations off Brazil until April 4, 1944. Afterwards, escorted convoys between Trinidad and Recife. During June 1944 assigned to Lt William Howard Glenn, Jr.

On January 1, 1945 departed for the United States escorting USS Pleiades (AK-46) and arrived in Miami two weeks later. Afterwards, underwent an overhaul in Miami then served as a school ship at Naval Training Center in Miami and Yorktown, Virginia. On July 10, 1945 assigned to Lt. Harold Charles Hyde until the end of World War II.

Postwar
On October 9, 1945 assigned to Lt Ferdinand Powell, Jr. and continued to be used as a training ship and operated between Charleston, New Haven and Norfolk. On December 19, 1945 placed under the command of Lt. Thomas Robert Crouch. On February 11, 1948 departed for Orange, Texas. On May 1, 1946 decommissioned and placed into reserve status at Orange, Texas. On February 7, 1955 reclassified as MSF-256.

Mexican Navy
On October 2, 1962 transferred to Mexico for use by the Armada de México (Mexican Navy). Commissioned as ARM DM-13. Later renamed ARM Cadete Juan Escutia C56. Officially stricken during 2000.

Fate
During October 2000, sunk by Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo the west coast of Cozumel Island in as part of the Parque Marino Arrecifes de Cozumel (Cozumel Marine Park) as an artificial reef and SCUBA dive site.
