Ship History Built by Willamette Iron and Steel Corporation in Portland, Oregon. Laid down August 3, 1943 as Admirable-class minesweeper. Launched June 3, 1944 as USS Harlequin (AM-365) sponsored by Mrs. Mary M. Doig. Commissioned August 31, 1945 in the U.S. Navy (USN) with Lt. Henry R. Darling in command. On October 19, 1945 arrived San Pedro for a shakedown cruise. On November 1, 1945 assigned to Lt Glen C. Wilkinson. On November 29, 1945 departed via the Panama Canal to New Orleans arriving December 15, 1945. Two days later assigned to Lt(jg) Thomas Kenneth Hendrick. On April 2, 1946 departed for Orange, Texas. Decommissioned on May 27, 1946. Reclassified as MSF-365 on February 7, 1955. On May 1, 1962 struck from the Navy list. Mexican Navy On October 2, 1962 transferred to Mexico for use by the Armada de México (Mexican Navy). Commissioned as ARM DM-20. During 1978, converted into an Oceanographic Research Vessel and renamed ARM Oceanográfico (H02). In 1993 reclassified and renamed ARM General Pedro María Anaya (A08). In 1999 converted into a school ship reclassified and renamed ARM Aldebaran (BE02). Officially stricken during 2000. Fate During May 2000, sunk by then Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo the west coast of Cozumel Island in as part of the Parque Marino Arrecifes de Cozumel (Cozumel Marine Park) as an artificial reef and SCUBA dive site. Shipwreck The vessel is upright on a sandy bottom at 80'. On October 21-22, 2005, Hurricane Wilma impacted the area as a Category 4 hurricane broke the shipwreck into two pieces and dragged one half some distance away and the stern tipped onto one side.
