Ship History Built by Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. Laid down June 19, 1918 as a Wickes-class destroyer. Launched September 14, 1918 as USS Walker (DD-163) named for John Grimes Walker sponsored by Mrs. Francis Pickering Thomas. Commissioned January 31, 1919 in the U.S. Navy (USN) at Boston Navy Yard. On February 20, 1919 departs Boston and rendezvous with SS George Washington with U.S. President Woodrow Wilson aboard returning from France then returns to Boston. Assigned to Division 18, Destroyer Force and proceeds to Newport, Rhode Island and loaded with torpedoes at Naval Torpedo Station. On March 6, 1919 departs bound for the West Indies and joins fleet exercises and maneuvers including exercises off San Juan, Puerto Rico and gunnery exercises off Guantanamo Bay, Cuba until the spring of 1920 then departs bound for New York arriving April 14, 1920 then to Newport. During May 1920 provides support for Navy NC boat flying boat transatlantic flights stationed at Trepassey Bay on Newfoundland and later as a picket ship in the Atlantic Ocean. PARTIAL HISTORY On April 1, 1939 redesignated YW-57 and underwent conversion at Mare Island Navy Yard. On July 11, 1941 redesignated damage control hulk DCH-1 and was based at San Diego and used for training for new damage control procedures and techniques. Next, stripped of all propulsion machinery and redesignated WY-57. On February 17, 1941 redesignated as unclassified vessel IX-44. Sinking History On December 28, 1941 while under tow by USS Neches (AO-5) from San Diego bound for Pearl Harbor and while underway was cast adrift and scuttled by gunfire at roughly Lat 26°35'N, Long 143°49'W.
