Ship History Built by William Cramp & Sons in Philadelphia. Laid down June 12, 1919 as Clemson-class destroyer with yard number 483. Launched November 6, 1919 as USS Whipple (DD-217) named for Commodore Abraham Whipple of the Continental Navy sponsored by Mrs. Gladys V. Mulvey, his great-great-great granddaughter. Commissioned April 23, 1920 in the U.S. Navy (USN) and underwent a shakedown cruise out of Guantanamo Bay on Cuba. PARTIAL HISTORY On November 25, 1941 before anticipated hostilities with Japan, U.S. Navy Admiral Hart, commander of the Asiatic Fleet, dispatched Destroyer Division 57 (DesDiv 57) including USS Whipple (DD-217), USS Alden (DD-211), USS John D. Edwards (DD-216) and USS Edsall (DD-219) plus destroyer tender USS Black Hawk (AD-9) from Manila Bay southward to Balikpapan. PARTIAL HISTORY On June 6, 1945 arrived at New London and was redesignated AG-117 and served as a target ship for submarines training. Om July 9, 1945 arrived New York Navy Yard for conversion into a high-speed target vessel. On August 5, 1945 departs New York via the Panama Canal then onward to San Diego then Pearl Harbor arriving at the end of the month. Postwar At the end of the Pacific War, Whipple served as a target vessel for submarines off Hawaii. Afterwards, returns via the Panama Canal to Philadelphia arriving October 18, 1945. On November 9, 1945 decommissioned. On December 5, 1945 struck from the Navy register. Fate On September 30, 1947 sold to Northern Metals Company of Philadelphia and broken up for scrap.
