Ship History Built by Bath Iron Works at Bath, Maine. Laid down November 14, 1940 as a Gleaves-class destroyer. Launched August 23, 1941 as USS Emmons (DD-475) named for Rear Admiral George F. Emmons sponsored by sponsored by Mrs. F. E. Peacock, his granddaughter. Commissioned December 5, 1941 in the U.S. Navy (USN) at Boston Naval Shipyard. Wartime History On January 31, 1942 departs Norfolk on a shakedown cruise to Callao, Peru and embarked Peruvian officers and transported them to Valparaiso, Chile then returns via Ecuador t Boston. During April 1942 patrols off New England and escorts USS Ranger to the Gold Coast, where the carrier launched U.S. Army fighters bound for Accra. PARTIAL LIST On June 6, 1944 participated in Operation Overlord the invasion of Normandy. PARTIAL LIST On July 10, 1944 participated in Operation Dragoon the invasion of southern France. PARTIAL LIST On November 9, 1944 modified at Boston and converted into a high speed minesweeper with six 20mm cannons, six side-throwing K guns replacing the original Y guns. On November 15, 1944 reclassified as DMS-22. On March 19, 1945 departs for the Pacific. On April 1, 1945 task with mine sweeping operations to clear the sea approaches to Okinawa. Afterwards, assigned to picket duty for the next five days. Sinking History On April 6, 1945 at 4:30pm while aiding USS Rodman (DMS-21), in less than two minutes, hit by five Kamikaze planes that damaged the stern and superstructure and lost power with fifty crew killed or missing. On April 7, 1945 in the morning began drifting towards Japanese held Ie Shima and was scuttled by USS Ellyson (DMS-19) that fired ninety-six 5" rounds that sank the damaged destroyer off Kouri Jima. Shipwreck The shipwreck of Emmons remains at a depth of 147' / 45m. During February 2001, the shipwreck was rediscovered and became a popular SCUBA dive site and is the only known World War II shipwreck off Okinawa.
