Ship History Built by Mission Valley Bridge and Iron Company in Evansville, IN. Laid down December 28, 1944 as LST-542 Class Tank Landing Ship. Launched February 6, 1945 as USS LST-1110. Commissioned March 7, 1945 in the U.S. Navy (USN) with Captain Lt. Alton S. Lee, USNR in command. Afterwards, underwent a shakedown cruise off Florida. Wartime History Loaded a cargo of creosote, piles, asphalt, and an Landing Craft Tank (LCT) then departed New Orleans via the Panama Canal via Pearl Harbor on April 15, 1945 then onward to Guam and unloaded her cargo then to Saipan and embarked fuel drums. On June 20, 1945 departs for Okinawa and unloads at Hagushi Bay then embarks U.S. Marines from the 6th Marines on July 26, 1945 until July 10, 1945 then departs for Guam where they are unloaded and at the end of the month departs for Guadalcanal. On August 19, 1945 departs Guadalcanal bound for the Philippines and at the end of the month arrives at Calicoan Island then operates in Lingayen Gulf and Lingayen Gulf. Postwar Assigned to Amphibious Group 8 and joins the occupation service. For her first tour, embarks elements of the 8th Field Artillery, 25th Division, I Corps then departs Lingayen Gulf and proceeds to Japan. On October 25, 1945 arrives Nagoya to unload them then returns to the Philippines. For her second tour, embarks U.S. Army Quartermaster personnel and transports them to Sasebo then to Iwo Jima arriving November 27, 1945 and embarks 20th Air Force personnel and transports them to Saipan arriving December 5, 1945 and remains in the Marianas until the end of the year. On January 8, 1946 departs Saipan via Pearl Harbor arriving at San Pedro on February 11, 1946. Afterwards, overhauled at Long Beach. In June 1946 to San Diego and assigned to ComPhibPac and provided amphibious training and logistic support off California. On June 25, 1948 departs Port Hueneme via San Francisco then northward with Summit County (LST-1146) to Seattle then operates in Alaska. During August 1948 departs for Long Beach. On September 16, 1948 arrives San Diego and for the next five years continues amphibious training and logistics operations in California with voyages each summer to Alaska. On July 1, 1955 renamed USS San Bernardino County named for San Bernardino County. On August 15, 1958 decommissioned. On August 16, 1958 transferred to the Republic of China and renamed "RPS Chung Chiang" (LST-225) and officially struck from the US Naval Register or February 6, 1959. Operated in China until 1993, ultimate fate unknown likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared. Awards LST-1110 earned one battle start for her World War II service.
