Sinking History Built by Quincy Barge Builders, Quincy, IL. Laid down September 29, 1942 as Landing Craft Tank (Mark 5). Delivered October 15, 1942 in three sections for trans-shipping to Mare Island Navy Yard on Mare Island for final assembly. Launched November 4, 1942 as LCT(5)-181 for service in the U.S. Navy (USN) and shipped overseas to the South Pacific. Wartime History Assigned to LCT Flotilla Five, LCT Group Fifteen, LCT Division Twenty-Nine. By January 1943 operating off Guadalcanal. On February 1, 1943 in the afternoon, one of two Landing Craft Tank (LCT) including LCT(5)-181 were being escorted by USS De Haven (DD-469) that was sunk by dive bombers. Afterwards, rescued survivors from the destroyer then transferred to USS Fletcher (DD-445). On June 20, 1943 participated in the New Georgia campaign including landings at New Georgia-Rendova-Vangunu until October 5, 1943 when converted into a repair barge with a Quonset hut inside the vessel. Postwar On January 8, 1946 struck from the Navy Register. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped. Awards For her World War II service, earned one battle star for the New Georgia campaign.
