Submarine History
Built by Karasukojima Naval Armory as the 30th Type A Midget Submarine completed. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN).

Sinking History
On November 11, 1942 at 2:00am Japanese submarine I-16 surfaces to launch this midget submarine but sights a PT Boat and dives. At 4:21am, I-16 surfaces again and launches HA-30 roughly 10.8 miles off Cape Esperance on Guadalcanal. Aboard is commander Lt(jg) Yamaki Teiji and crew member PO1C Hashimoto Ryoichi. During the launch, the rudder is damaged and three minutes later the midget submarine looses steering control but attempts to reach Kamimbo Bay (Tambea). Spotting two enemy aircraft, the crew scuttles the damaged midget submarine.

Fates of the Crew
Both of the crew reach Marovovo on Guadalcanal and join Japanese forces. Their ultimate fate is unknown.

Shipwreck
Possibly, the Type A Midget Submarine raised by USS Ortolan (ASR-5) off Guadalcanal displayed at the Submarine Force Museum is this submarine.

References
Previously, Lt Yamaki Teiji was to participate in the May 31, 1942 midget submarine attack against Sydney Harbor, but did not participate because of the death of his crewman in a training exercise before the operation.

"Locally, this submarine has always been labeled as HA-8. Some sources identify the midget as the HA-8, others the HA-10 and still others the HA-30. It came to the SUBASE Groton as part of a country war bond effort in 1943-1944 and has remained in Groton ever since. It is one of four such Type A midgets on display in the world."
