Sub History Built by Manitowoc Shipbuilding in Manitowic, Wisconsin. Laid down June 18, 1941 as a Gato-class submarine. Launched April 30, 1942 as USS Peto (SS-265) named for the Peto fish sponsored by Mrs. E. A. Lofquist with great fanfare and news coverage as the first submarine built by Manitowoc Shipbuilding for the U.S. Navy. Commissioned November 21, 1942 in the U.S. Navy (USN) with Lieutenant Commander William T. Nelson in command. Peter Ording adds: "The film footage of this submarine launching is routinely seen on television any time you see a WWII sub being side launched. The big counterweight in the background is a drawbridge style railroad bridge still there today, but not used. I think the ship behind the bridge may be one of the minesweepers built here." PARTIAL HISTORY On October 1, 1943 Peto spotted Japanese convoy N-805 and observed three cargo ships escorted by a single subchaser and fires a spread of six torpedoes at at Lat 4° 1'N, Long 143° 47' E, roughly 373 miles east southeast of Palau. At 5:00pm, one torpedo hit and sinks Kinkasan Maru. Another torpedo hits and sinks Tonei Maru. PARTIAL HISTORY On August 15, 1945, Peto was on life guard duty when Japan surrendered. The next day, departs across the Pacific. On September 15, 1945 transits the Panama Canal then arrives New Orleans six days later. Postwar On June 1946 assigned to the Atlantic Fleet and placed out of commission in reserve in New London, CT. During November 1956 became a Naval Reserve training submarine used by the 8th Naval District. On August 1, 1960 struck from the Naval Vessel Register. Scrapped On November 29, 1960 sold and broken up for scrap. Awards Peto earned eight battle stars for World War II service. References NavSource - USS Peto (SS-265) Contribute
