Construction Built at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Laid down January 27, 1943 as a Balao-class submarine. Launched August 1, 1943 as USS Golet (SS-361) sponsored by Mrs. Wiley, wife of U.S. Senator Alexander Wiley of Wisconsin. Commissioned November 30. 1943 in the U.S. Navy (USN) with Lt. Commander James M. Clement in command. Named "Golet" after the Golet California trout. Ferried down the Mississippi River through the Panama Canal to Pearl Harbor. First War Patrol On March 18, 1944 departed Pearl Harbor to patrol the Kuriles and the area south of Hokkaido and east of Honshu. Bad weather conditions and ice were encountered. Only one target came into view, and was too fast for the submarine. No sinking or damage to enemy ships was recorded. Second War Patrol Enroute to her second patrol, command was given to Lt. Commander J. S. Clark. On May 28, 1944 departed Midway to patrol the area off the northeast coast of Honshu. No word was heard from the submarine after it departed. Sinking History On June 14, 1944 Japanese reported a depth charge attack in a submarine and noted “On the spot of fighting we later discovered corks, raft, etc and heavy oil pool of 50 by 5,200 meters”. On July 5, 1944 Golet was scheduled to depart her patrol area and return to Midway. On July 9, 1944, she was sent a message which required acknowledgment, but no reply was received, nor did she return to Midway as expected on July 12 or 13.
