Background
The 147th Infantry Regiment (147th IR) was an independent regiment of the U.S. Army. and served in the Pacific War during World War II. Nicknamed the "Gypsies of the Pacific".

Wartime History
On February 27, 1945 a detachment of the 147th Infantry Regiment arrive on Iwo Jima. On March 20, 1945 the rest of the 147th Infantry Regiment lands on Iwo Jima to take over the defense of the island attached to the 3d Marine Division for operational control. On April 4, 1945 the 147th assumes full responsibility for ground defense and mopping-up from the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC).
