Background
The United States Army (USA) 96th Engineer General Service Regiment / 96th Engineers (Colored) was comprised of African American enlisted soldiers commanded by white officers and served in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) during World War II.

Wartime History The 96th Engineers were the first engineers sent overseas to Port Moresby in New Guinea and undertook road and construction projects, including building the causeway from Tatana Island to the mainland.
