Background
The 20th Air Force (20th AF) was part of the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF). On April 4, 1944 Headquarters, Twentieth Air Force (20th AF) is activated in Washington, DC as a strategic Air Force with a global operating area equipped with B-29 Superfortress heavy bombers for the strategic bombing campaign against Japan. Initially operated from China-Burma-India (CBI) then the Mariana Islands until the end of the Pacific War.
