Background
The 56th Troop Carrier Squadron (55th TCS) operated the C-47 Skytrain in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA).

Wartime History
On July 25, 1943 lost C-47A 42-23618 pilot Captain George W. Beswick crashed near the summit of a high mountain near the Sela River with five killed and five survivors.

On December 23, 1943 lost C-47A "Windy City" 42-23500 pilot 1st Lt Gale J. Chase (MIA) over the Owen Stanley Range.

On July 9, 1944 lost C-47 "Shakes All Over" 42-23705 pilot 1st Lt. Marvin Davis crashed Saidor Gap.
