Background
On September 24, 1944 the 5276th Rescue Composite Group (Provisional) was established in the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF).

Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF) in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA).

By October 1944 redesignated 5276th Rescue Group (5276th BG).

On October 2, 1944 the 3rd Emergency Rescue Squadron (3rd ERS) was assigned.

During late March 1945 the 6th Emergency Rescue Squadron (6th ERS) was assigned.

On March 16, 1945 renamed 5th Emergency Rescue Group (5th ERG).
