Background
On June 13, 1917 organized as 20th Aero Squadron at Camp Kelly in the U.S. Army.

On April 30, 1922 assigned to the Panama Canal Department. On May 27, 1922 assigned to the 6th Observation Group, later renamed 6th Comppsite Group (6th CG), then the 6th Bombardment Group (6th BG). On July 2, 1926 became part of the U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC). On June 20, 1941 became part of the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF).

Wartime History
On December 8, 1941 moves to Rio Hao in Panama. On January 21, 1942 moves to Salinas in Ecuador. On May 12, 1943 assigned to the 40th Bombardment Group (40th BG).

On May 22, 1943 moves to Howard Field.

On July 1, 1943 moves to Pratt Army Airfield and remains unitl March 12, 1944.

On April 11, 1944 moves to Chakulia Airfield in India and remains until April 1945.

On April 7, 1945 moves to West Field on Tinian.

Postwar
On October 1, 1946 inactivated. On May 9, 1952 redesignated 25th Bombardment Squadron (Medium). On May 28, 1952 reactivated in the U.S. Air Force (USAF). On May 28, 1952 redesignated as 40th Bombardment Wing (40th BW).
