Background
On March 10, 1943 the Fourteenth Air Force (14th AF) is activated at Kunming assigned to U.S. Army Forces, China-Burma-India (CBI) under the command of Major General Claire L. Chennault. This new
Air Force is responsible for all USAAF units in China.
On June 17, 1945 General Henry H. "Hap" Arnold, Commanding
General USAAF requests Major General Claire L. Chennault be replaced by Lt. Gen. George E. Stratemeyer as commander of the Fourteenth Air Force.
