Lakunai Airfield
Know by the Japanese as Rabinjikku - or 'Rabaul lower',
this airfield is located closest to the town of Rabaul. It was
primarily a fighter strip, and after the war served as the contemporary
airport until the 1994 eruption, when it was covered in ash. Today
it is abandoned and unused. Above is a
panoramic view of the former runway, with the volcanic in the
background.
Ki 21 Sally
There is the remains of a partially intact G4M Betty Bomber off
to the side of the strip. Despite bomb damage that broke its back,
the bomber's Red Hinomaru (Rising Sun) markings are still visible
on one wing.
