Vunakanau
Airfield
Field where RAAF Wiraways rose to meet
the overwhelming Japanese onslaught, and after Japanese occupation
was a major airstrip for them.
Today,
the strip is overgrown and abandoned, although the area of the runway is still
clearly visible. There are the remains of some anti-aircraft
guns and searchlights at one end of the field, and small bits of wreckage of one
of the Wirraway fighters.
