Aircraft History Built by Douglas Aircraft Company. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as A-20A Havoc serial number 40-094. Disassembled and shipped overseas to Australia and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 3rd Bombardment Group (3rd BG), 89th Bombardment Squadron (89th BS). Assigned to pilot Charlie "Chuck" Mayo and gunner SSgt Wade W. Wright with crew chief Pete Fox. Nicknamed "Rebel Rocket" with the nose art of a rocket with a gun with a flame shooting out of the barrel. Below the cockpit was painted: "Pilot Chuck Mayo Crew Chief Pete Fox" with the names in a white cursive style font. Mission History On June 16, 1943 while taxing at 3 Mile Drome (Kila) near Port Moresby the crew chief accidentally taxied into an embankment when the brakes failed and damaged the aircraft.
