IJN Tainan Kōkūtai |
Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi completed April 14, 1942. At the factory, painted overall gray with a black engine cowl. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 / A6M2 Model 21 Zero manufacture number 4688. This aircraft was assigned a Houkoku Gou 490 (Navy Patriotic Presentation Number 490). Donated by Japanese company Awa Seishi (Awa Paper Manufacturing Company) in black on the rear fuselage. Wartime History Assigned to the Tainan Kōkūtai (Tainan Air Group) with tail code V-179. This Zero operated from Lae Airfield until abandoned. Wreckage On September 16, 1943 this Zero was examined by Allied Technical Intelligence Unit (ATIU) that noted the manufacture number 4688 and photographed Houkoku Gou 490. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
