Aircraft History
Built by by Douglas at Long Beach. Constructors Number 32424. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-17G-95-DL Flying Fortress serial number 44-83783.

Wartime History
Assigned to the 7th Air Force (7th AF), 7th Fighter Command (7th FC), 4th Rescue Squadron (4th RS). When lost, engines R-1820-97 serial number SW-043123, SW-043298, SW-043318 and SW-043130.

Mission History
On May 27, 1946 took off from Guam piloted by 2nd Lt. Paul A. Kauchack on a search mission bound for Eniwetok for C-54G Skymaster 45-489 pilot Captain Louis L. Jernigan that went missing two days prior. The weather was scattered cumulus clouds with rain squalls. Ran out of fuel and went missing.

Memorials
The entire crew were officially declared dead on June 1, 1946. None of the crew earned the Purple Heart, posthumously as the flight was non-combat. All are memorialized at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing. Kauchack, Kubala, Kilfoyle, Bauer, Fraser, Herrick, Ames, Long and Gierhahn on court 7. Tracy on court 5.

Kauchack also has a memorial marker at Restland Memorial Park in Monroeville, PA.

Kubala also has a memorial marker at Holy Cross Cemetery at section 1, row 17 in Granger, TX.

Herrick also has a memorial marker at Hillside Cemetery in East Hartford, CT.

Ames also has a memorial marker at Troy Center Cemetery in Troy Center, PA. On May 27, 1951 a military memorial service was held in his honor at the Troy Center Methodist with Reverend. J. L. Murray officiating.

Long also has a memorial maker at Chariton Cemetery at section O in Chariton, IA.
