Aircraft History Built by Consolidated. Constructors Number 3344. At the factory, this bomber had a unpainted aluminum finish. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-24J-155-CO Liberator serial number 42-110195. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA). Wartime History During April 1944, assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 22nd Bombardment Group (22nd BG) "Red Raiders", 2nd Bombardment Squadron (2nd BS). No known nickname or nose art. Tail letter S. This bomber flew at least fourteen bombing missions. On April 10, 1944 first mission bombing Hansa Bay. On June 8, 1944 took off from Nadzab Airfield piloted by 1st Lt. John J. Durkin on a flight to Hollandia Airfield to stage and spent the night for an upcoming mission. Mission History On June 9, 1944 at 6:30am took off from Hollandia Airfield piloted by 1st Lt. John J. Durkin on a flight bound for Wakde Airfield then to bomb Peleliu Island. During take off, his bomber suffered an failure of the no. 4 engine. While attempting to abort the take off, the brakes failed and hydraulic system malfunction that caused the plane to run off the runway and crashed into a ditch. Aboard, six of the crew were injured, three with serious injuries including Durkin who suffered multiple breaks to his left arm. Gunner Sgt W. J. Schomphe was trapped under the top turret for six hours before he was freed with only minor injuries. During take off, his bomber suffered a failure of the no. 4 engine. Durkin attempted to abort the mission but the brakes failed and the hydraulic system malfunction. Durkin attempted to a that caused the plane to run off the runway and crashed into a ditch. Aboard, three of the crew were injured including Durkin who suffered multiple breaks to his left arm. This bomber was damaged and written off.
