Revenge of the Red Raiders The Illustrated History of the 22nd Bombardment Group During World War II When Lawrence Hickey published his first book, Warpath Across The Pacific it set a new standard for aviation group histories. Regarded as the best group history ever published, Hickey has topped himself, with the long awaited release of this volume about the 22nd Bombardment Group (22nd BG) "Red Raiders". During World War II, 22nd BG has a long legacy as one of the first bomber groups to arrive in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) flying the Martin B-26 Marauder against the Japanese from bases in northern Australia and New Guinea. Later, the group also flew the B-25 Mitchell and later the B-24 Liberator. With 624 pages, the core of the book is an outstanding unit history, that begins with the group's formation, and finishes with the end of World War II. Each page is lavishly illustrated with incredible combat photography, crew and aircraft photos and detailed maps. Like Warpath, the book is far more than just a unit history. The appendix sections are important works of history and research in themselves. An appendix details all losses of the 22nd, including Killed, Missing or other death, sorted by date. Each loss is described with a text summary, and all crew noted. Another details every aircraft of the 22nd, listing nickname, serial number, assignment details, pilots and crew chiefs. This appendix is particularly useful for anyone interested in details on this unit's aircraft. The appendix on markings and insignia is a detailed study of nose art and individual markings, as well as squadron and group ones over the 22nd's long service. The final appendix are aircraft profiles for the bomber's profiled in the book's extensive artwork color profile section. The stories behind the art and insignia are amazing and memorable in their own right. In addition to the intense historical study, the book is rich with artwork, including full color paintings by aviation artist Jack Fellows.
