On March 19, 1943 first test flight. On March 22, 1943 delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-24D-65-CO Liberator serial number 42-40524. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 380th Bombardment Group (380th BG) "The Flying Circus", 530th Bombardment Squadron (530th BS). Nicknamed "The Red Ass" in block letters inside the outline of a cloud with the nose art of a seated mule. Below the left side of the cockpit was a scoreboard with bomb markings indicating missions flown. When lost engines R-1830-43 serial numbers 42-40524, 42-61487, 42-61890 and 42-61920. Armed with .50 caliber machine guns makers unknown serial numbers 457233, 457227, 496077, 112360, 474001, 437078, 237232, 457135, 457062 and 130803. Mission History On September 11, 1943 took off from Fenton Airfield piloted by Captain David A. Lippincott on a bombing mission over Makassar. The weather was 1/10 scattered cumulus clouds to target with a base at 2,500' and good visibility. Over the target, hit by its own bomb explosion or shot down by anti-aircraft fire over Makassar in the Celebes (Sulawesi). When this bomber failed to return, it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials The entire crew was officially declared dead on December 19, 1945. All are memorialized at Manila American Cemetery on the tablets of the missing. Lippincott earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. He also has a memorial marker at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at Section OSA Site 94. Swan earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. Grace earned the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. He also has a memorial marker at Kenyon College Cemetery in Gambier, OH. Moore earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. Pratscher earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. Simaika Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart, posthumously. Chapman earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. Page earned the Purple Heart, posthumously. Hallam earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. He also has a memorial marker at Mendon Township Cemetery in Mendon, MI. Canning earned the Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously.
