Inbound to the target, the formation was intercepted by 40-50 Japanese fighters that made aggressive attacks and dropped phosphorous bombs to break up the bomber formation. At 10:55am about two minutes before reaching the target, a Zero made a firing pass at B-24s from 19th Bomb Squadron while peeling off was hit by defensive gunfire and crashed into the right wing of this bomber causing it to explode in a ball of flames and both planes crashed. When this plane failed to return it was listed as Missing In Action (MIA).

Recovery of Remains
Postwar, the remains of the crew were recovered by a team from American Graves Registration Service (AGRS). The recovered remains were designated Unknown X-292 (X-File 292). During 1947, the recovered remains were buried at American Military Cemetery Barrackpore at plot 3, row S, grave 27. Only Bakken was individually identified, the other remains were deemed to be the rest of the crew. After identification, the remains were exhumed and transported to the United States for permanent burial.
