Aircraft History Built by North American Aviation (NAA) in Inglewood. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-25C Mitchell serial number 41-12938. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 38th Bombardment Group (38th BG), 405th Bombardment Squadron (405th BS). Nicknamed "Ole Cappy". During 1943, this B-25 operated from 17 Mile Drome (Durand) near Port Moresby. On January 7, 1943 took off at 9:40am on a search mission for B-17F Flying Fortress 41-24383 reported as missing the previous day over the Gulf of Papua. This B-25 flew 100 miles out to sea on course of 190° searching a width of roughly 50-60 miles but made nil sightings and landed at 11:45am. Until at least March 1944, this B-25 was used as an administrative aircraft. Officially condemned on November 16, 1944. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped.
