Pilot Lt. Harvey (survived) Force Landed April 16, 1944 Aircraft History Built by North American Aviation (NAA). Constructors Number 96-16746. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-25G-5 Mitchell serial number 42-64867. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Modified into a B-25D-1 strafer variant by the 4th Air Depot at Garbutt Field in Townsville. Wartime History During November 1943 assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 38th Bombardment Group (38th BG) "Sun Setters", 823rd Bombardment Squadron (823rd BS) "The Terrible Tigers". Nicknamed "Old War Horse". Assigned to pilot Nelles and crew chief Ledbetter. On December 6, 1943 first combat mission. Mission History On April 16, 1944 took off from Nadzab Airfield on a bombing mission against Hollandia. On the return flight, the formation encountered a severe weather front of bad weather. This B-25 ran out of fuel on approach to land at Saidor Airfield and although the runway was crowded with other planes was forced to land. This bomber made a three point landing halfway down the runway then skidded off into the mud causing the nose wheel to collapse and came to rest in mud. The crew survived unhurt but the bomber was written off.
