USAAF 5th AF |
Aircraft History Built by North American Aviation (NAA). Constructors Number 98-21451. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-25H-5 Mitchell serial number 43-4450. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to the South West Pacific Area (SWPA). Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF). On the side of the right side of the nose is "Jim~Lynn". It is unclear if this is the nickname or a crew member's name. This bomber was stripped for usable parts then abandoned without the nose section or engines near Dobodura No. 4 (Horanda 4Y). Wreckage Until the 1970s, this B-25 was abandoned in the kunai grass near Dobodura No. 4 (Horanda 4Y). In the early 1970s, moved to Girua Airport (Dobodura No. 7) for display as a war memorial and installed by Oro Province Works Department. To form a complete bomber, the greenhouse nose section of B-25D "Bar Fly" 42-30593 was attached in front of the cockpit. Two P-47 Thunderbolt engines, also recovered from the Girua area are displayed in front of the Mitchell. For display purposes, the left landing gear (from a B-24) is bolted onto left wing to make an externally complete aircraft.
