Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-29A-20-BN Superfortress serial number 42-93955. Ferried overseas to Guam. Wartime History Assigned to the 20th Air Force (20th AF), 330th Bombardment Group (330th BG), 458th Bombardment Squadron (458th BS). Tail code K-37. Nicknamed "Behrens Brood". Mission History On June 1, 1945 took off from North Field (Andersen AFB) on Guam piloted by Captain Carl R. Bauer on a bombing mission (mission 187) against Osaka. Over the target, this B-29 was hit by anti-aircraft fire in the cockpit that killed pilot Captain Behrens and wounded the co-pilot who managed to fly back to Iwo Jima where the crew bailed out and were rescued. Afterwards, the B-29 was shot down by a P-61 and crashed into the sea. Memorials Behrens was declared dead the day of the mission. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), Air Medal and Purple Heart, posthumously. He is memorialized at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing, court 7.
