Aircraft History Built by Boeing. Constructors Number 11691. Delivered to the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) as B-29A-70-BN Superfortress serial number 44-62214. On September 18, 1947 assigned to the U.S. Air Force (USAF). During 1954 or 1955, suffered ground accident at Eielson AFB and written off. After being stripped for usable parts, the B-29 was towed onto a frozen lake and used as a training aid for a ditched bomber. During the spring or summer, the ice thawed and the bomber sunk and was abandoned. Wreckage This B-29 remains in situ today partially submerged. Only the tip of the tail, top of the nose and engine cowlings are above the surface. Nicknamed "Lady of the Lake".
