Constructor Number 22214. Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as C-46D-20-CU Commando serial number 44-78391. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific. Wartime History Assigned to the 7th Air Force (7th AF) Service Command, 311th Troop Carrier Squadron (311th TCS). No known nickname or nose art. When lost, engines: R-2800-75 serial numbers NBR1FP088390 and NBR2FP088475. Mission History On October 12, 1945 took off from Naha Airfield on Okinawa piloted by 1st Lt. Kenneth W. Coats on a ferry flight with 7 crew and 34 passengers bound for Iwo Jima. Last seen on take off. When this plane failed to arrive it was officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). No definite cause was determined. Memorials Everyone aboard was officially declared dead the day of the mission. As the flight was non-combat, none of the crew or passengers earned the Purple Heart, posthumously. The entire crew is memorialized at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing. Coats on court 7.
