Delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force (USAAF) as C-47 Skytrain serial number unknown. Ferried overseas via Hickam Field then across the Pacific to Australia. Wartime History Assigned to the 5th Air Force (5th AF), 374th Troop Carrier Group (374th TCG), 22nd Troop Carrier Squadron (22nd TCS). Nicknamed "Smokey Joe". Mission History On January 14, 1944 took off from Cairns Airfield piloted by 1st Lt. Austin N. Malcomb, Jr. on a flight via Horn Island bound for 5 Mile Drome (Ward) near Port Moresby. Aboard were three engines and radio equipment. Passing over Cooktown near Price Charlotte's Bay skirted large and small thunderstorms and was unable to stay on course and flew on instruments. Memorials Malcomb remained in the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He passed away January 6, 2013 at age 90. On July 29, 2013 buried at Arlington National Cemetery at section 55, grave 3980.
