Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi completed September 22, 1942. At the factory painted with green upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces. True serial number 226. Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 Observation Seaplane / F1M2 Pete manufacture number 726. Assembled at 21st Naval Air Depot near Sasebo. Assigned to Sanyo Maru with tail code P-57. Wartime History This Pete operated operated from Rekata Bay Seaplane Base on Santa Isabel Island until abandoned facing shore at the edge of Rekata Bay and partially sunk onto the center pontoon with the control surfaces missing. Wreckage During September 1943 a team from Allied Technical Air Intelligence Unit (ATAIU) visited Rekata Bay and studied and photographed. The team noted manufacture number 726 and tail code P-57 and was reported in Crashed Enemy Aircraft Report (CEAR) #17 released on February 15, 1944.
