Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi. At the factory, painted with dark green upper surfaces and gray lower surfaces. True serial number unknown (three digits). Delivered to the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as Type 0 Observation Seaplane / F1M2 Pete manufacture number unknown (four digits). Wartime History Assigned to the 958 Kōkūtai (958 Air Group). No known tail number or markings. During 1943–1944 this Pete operated from Kairiru Seaplane Base off St. John's Mission (Saint John's Mission, Barakam) on Kairiru Island and flew patrols and protected convoys arriving or departing the Wewak area and patrolling as far north as the Admiralty Islands. During 1943 or early 1944 this Pete was sunk at its mooring or crashed into Kairiru Strait. Wreckage This Pete remains in Kairiru Strait upside down on a sandy bottom at a depth of 27m / 90'. There are strong currents at this location and sea life including small fish and soft coral covers the wreckage. Contribute
