Aircraft History
Built by Vought. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F4U-1 Corsair bureau number 17777. Disassembled and shipped overseas to the South Pacific.

Wartime History
Assigned to the United States Marine Corps (USMC), 1st Marine Air Wing (MAW-1), Marine Air Group 11 (MAG-11), Marine Fighting Squadron 124 "Whistling Death/Wild Aces" VMF-124. Fuselage number 93. No known nickname or nose art.

Mission History
On December 17, 1943 took off from Barakoma Airfield on Vella Lavella piloted by 1st Lt D. J. Moore on a mission against Rabaul. Returning, this F4U landed at Stirling Airfield on rough gravel and hit a boulder with one of the wheels, flipping it over. Afterwards, Moore was hospitalized for shock overnight, then returned to duty.

The upside down Corsair was loaded onto a trailer by a crane from the 87th Construction Battalion Seabees, then taken to the dock area and transported to the nearest repair facility. Fate afterwards unknown, likely written off or scrapped.
