Pilot 1st Lt William R. Swenson, O-028163 USMCR (MIA / KIA) Kanesville, UT MIA May 10, 1945 Aircraft History Built by Vought. Delivered to the U.S. Navy (USN) as F4U-1D Corsair bureau number 57611. Disassembled and shipped overseas and reassembled. Wartime History Assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) to Marine Fighting Squadron 312 (VMF-312) "Day's Knights". No known nickname or nose art. Mission History On May 10, 1945 took off from Kadena Airfield on Okinawa piloted by 1st Lt William R. Swenson on a ground support mission against enemy troops and gun emplacements on southern Okinawa. This Corsair was last seen on the third run over the target area. When this aircraft failed to return officially listed as Missing In Action (MIA). Memorials Swenson was officially declared dead on May 11, 1946. He earned the Purple Heart, posthumously. Swenson is memorialized at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) on the courts of the missing, court 4.
