Mitsubishi J2M Raiden (Jack)
Technical Information


Background
Designed by a team led by Jiro Horikoshi who previously designed the A6M Zero. Designated by Raiden 雷電 meaning "Lightning Bolt". Variants of the Jack included various armaments and engines. Mitsubishi built 450 Raiden fighters of all variants, by the time the Pacific War ended. The sole surviving aircraft is J2M3 Jack 3014 displayed at Planes of Fame Museum (The Air Museum).

J2M2
155 of the J2M2 were delivered with two 20mm Type 99 cannon and two 7.7mm machine-guns.

J2M3
Production then switched to the J2M3, in which the machine-guns were removed and four cannon mounted in the wings.

J2M4
A few high-altitude J2M4 turbo charged versions were built, armed with six cannon, the two additional guns being mounted in the top fuselage decking.

J2M5
Armed with two 20mm cannons and a more powerful engine formidable against B-29 Superfortress.
