Aircraft History Built by Kawasaki. Delivered to the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) as Type 95 Fighter / Ki-10-II (Perry) manufacture number 3046. The plane had two vertical white stripes on the rear fuselage. Mission History On April 30, 1938 took off on a mission in the vicinity of Daqing in Heilongjiang Province in northeast Manchukuo (Manchuria) in northeast China. Due to an issue, the pilot force landed in what he believed was friendly territory but was actually over the border and landed intact inside the Far East of the Soviet Union (USSR). Capture The fighter was captured by the Soviets then shipped by train on the Chinese Eastern Railway then across the Soviet Union to Moscow. On June 19, 1938 arrives at the Voenno-Vozdushnye Sily (Soviet Air Force) research institute and was repaired, evaluated then underwent flight testing by four Soviet pilots and an engineer. The Soviets concluded incorrectly that the plane was built by Nakajima (sic Kawasaki) and referred to the plane as the Nakajima Type 95 bis and concluded it was built between September–November 1937. The captured plane was used to develop new tactics to counter the type by Soviet bombers and fighters. During testing, one pilot achieved a maximum speed of 377 km/h. The Soviets concluded that although the fighter was slower it was more maneuverable that their fighters. Fate On September 10, 1938 took off piloted by a Soviet pilot to engaged in a mock dog fight against an I-15 Chaika. During the engagement, this plane veered sideways and entered a steep dive and was unable to recover and crashed killing the pilot.
