Aircraft History Built by Mitsubishi. Delivered to the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) as Type 97 Heavy Bomber / Ki-21 Sally manufacture number unknown (four digits). Wartime History Assigned to an unknown Sentai. No known markings or tail code. During late August 1945 or early September 1945 painted in surrender markings overall white with green crosses atop the Hinomaru insignia. Mission History On October 2, 1945 took off on a flight to Penfoei Airfield on West Timor. Aboard was Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) Lt. General Kunitaro Yamada, Commanding Officer (C. O.) of the 48th Division. While landing, the right undercarriage collapsed damaging the right side but none of the crew or passengers were injured. The next day, Lt. General Yamada surrendered at Koepang. Afterwards, this Sally was photographed on the runway. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared.
