Aircraft History Built by 1st Army Air Arsenal, estimated date of completion April 1943. Delivered to the Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF) as Type 99 Assault Plane Shugeki / Ki-51B Sonia manufacture number 2278. Wartime History Assigned to the 26th Hiko Sentai (26th Flying Regiment), 3rd Chutai (3rd Company). Painted with gray mottled upper surfaces. During 1943, operated from Lae Airfield. Likely, this Sonia was damaged or being serviced. By September 1943 abandoned near the runway with both wings removed with the fuselage atop fuel drums. Wreckage On September 16, 1943 this Sonia was among the Japanese aircraft captured at Lae Airfield. This Sonia was investigated "pro forma" by Allied Technical Intelligence Unit (ATIU). No markings were noted. Ultimate fate unknown, likely scrapped or otherwise disappeared. References Production Record of the Type 99 Assault / Recon Plane by Jim Long Crashed Enemy Aircraft Report No, 17 (CEAR 17) This document notes a total of at least 80 wrecks, including: 1 Ki-51 Jim Long adds "CEAR #17, where it was reported to have been the reconnaissance model, and on JAPMC #s 2357, 2360, and 2497, where it was reported to have been a light bomber, which would be equal to the assault version."
